At 1:00pm this afternoon, Company 4 and Tanker 5 were dispatched to an area known as the ‘abyss’ by local responders. It is an area where Routes 376 (Penn Lincoln Parkway), 22 (William Penn Highway) and 76 (PA Turnpike) converge to confuse speeding drivers to the point of panic. We have had several (mostly box) trucks end up on their side as they enter the ‘abyss’. Today, a truck hauling kegs of beer attempted the challenge and failed. Luckily, the driver was uninjured and only a couple of the kegs made the ultimate sacrifice. Rescue 4 utilized oil dry and absorbent pads/socks to prevent motor oil and beer – also known as ‘black ale’ – from entering the storm drains.
